The RACE TECH World Motorsport Symposium discussed a number of topics on both days but the issues that have been highlighted are motorsport's sustainability. In a world that is increasingly energy conscious, motor racing may be seen a wasting precious resources, so what should it be doing to protect its future. In the past, it was seen as an important R&D offshoot for the automotive industry, especially in the early decades of both industries, but in the last few years, there has even been a divergence so that there is little commonality between the two. If the motorsport industry is to resume its original role as an automotive development resource, then it will mean a fundamental change in the cars and powertrain. The key, though, are the regulators. Unless they begin to allow motorsport engineers to innovate by loosening up the regulations, then motorsport will solely become an entertainment industry with little relevance to advancing technology, except for its own sake.. It then also becomes a competitor for the same buck/pound/euro in the entertainment business and could ultimately fail. It is therefore vitally important that the motorsport industry puts pressure on the regulators to free up the rules, to make them more open and to give engineers the chance to develop new relevant technology. We very much welcome your input in this and to start the ball rolling ask the question about what you would like the racing car - Formula One, Le Mans, Touring Cars, rally cars - to look like in five or six years time? And what about the powertrain?
